Toward a Basic Understanding of: Self Injury

 

This educational series is presented by Seminole Behavioral Healthcare as part of its commitment toward a greater community understanding and response to those suffering from behavioral disorders. It is one of six components of Mental Health First Aid. The objectives of this course are as follows:

Through participation in this course, attendees will be able to:

  1. Define self-injury including the range of behaviors it describes
  2. Describe the personal risk factors contributing to self-injury
  3. Describe the social and family environmental factors contributing to self-injury
  4. Describe the psychological risk factors contributing to self-injury
  5. Describe the biological risk factors contributing to self-injury
  6. Describe the situational factors contributing to self-injury
  7. Understand how a layperson can best respond to self-injuring behavior
  8. Describe how clinicians respond to self-injuring behavior
  9. Understand the resources available to those in Central Florida who experience self-injury
